Who Were the Historic Knights Templar?
The medieval Knights Templar were founded during the early 12th century. Their full name was the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon.
The order was originally established to help protect Christian pilgrims travelling through the Holy Land. Its members combined the religious life of monks with the duties of medieval knights.
The order grew rapidly and became one of the best-known military religious orders of the Middle Ages. It continued until it was officially dissolved in 1312.
